What is CNG?

In case of spillage, there is no danger as it tends to scatters in air. CNG is made by compression of the natural gas till it goes down to 1% in volume and then it is stored in hard cylinders from where it is passed out to markets or to consumers

Usage of CNG in Pakistan

The price of CNG is a lot less than petrol or diesel which is one of the main reasons why it has found it use as a fuel. For using compressed natural gas, a vehicle needs to be converted from petroleum or other fuel settings to gas settings which usually involves installment of a gas cylinder in the car. As traveling is an everyday chore, a car or any other vehicle with pre-installed gas cylinder having 15 liter equivalent of petrol could take you to multiple place in a day as compared to a car running on petrol for which you would have to stop to refuel once or maybe twice. Due to the cheap price factor, its usage as a fuel has been increasing in Pakistan, India, Europe, Iran, South and North America. Apart from cars, CNG is also being used as a fuel in bigger locomotives like trains. According to a survey conducted in 2013, Iran has the highest number of vehicles running on CNG with around 3.50 million registered vehicles followed by Pakistan with 2.79 million registered vehicles, Argentina with 2.28 million vehicles, Brazil with 1.75 million vehicles, China with 1.58 million registered vehicles, Italy with 0.82 million registered vehicles etc-

Pakistan CNG Prices

In Pakistan, the price of CNG is determined and set by Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority also commonly known as OGRA. Back in 2011, when petrol prices peaked in Pakistan, CNG became the choice of fuel for most of the vehicle owners. Long queues of cars, rickshaws, wagons and pickups would form up outside of CNG stations getting their tanks filled one by one. Even when CNG supply used to be short, drivers would use to somehow locate the stations having CNG stocked up and then head to those stations to get their gas tanks filled even if it took hours to wait in the queue. Back then, CNG prices were considerably low in comparison to petrol or other fuel. In December 2016, when CNG prices were deregulated, a lot of financial burden came upon CNG consumers. In those days, CNG was being available at 67.50 per kilogram while petrol price was 66.27 per litre. Adding fuel to fire was the three day CNG load shedding in the country which caused a lot of consumers to switch back to petrol and diesel
